The Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, school board passed a resolution Wednesday, Sept. 17, calling on the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, or CalSTRS, to divest from assets and companies profiting from military technology, especially those contributing to the war on Gaza.

The BUSD school board approved a resolution urging the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) to update its ethical investing policy to refrain from contributing “to military occupation and human rights violations around the world.”

Teachers from across the state rallied outside the CalSTRS Headquarters in West Sacramento Wednesday morning to demand that the public educator pension fund divest from corporations that they say are enabling tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza.

Public comment dominated the Investment Committee’s May session, with about 20 speakers asking the California State Teachers’ Retirement System to sell holdings they said support human‑rights violations and to stop supporting firms tied to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
"Rank and file teachers in the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) are mobilizing to demand their pension fund–CalSTRS– divest from Israel’s genocide in Palestine, sell off investments in immigrant surveillance, and quit the war economy altogether. CalSTRS, the second largest public pension fund in the United States, invests over a billion dollars of its $352 billion portfolio in corporations that teachers say commit grave human rights violations not only in the US, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) abducts protesters in broad daylight but in also in Palestine and throughout a Middle East under bombardment."
